Level 1 – Basic Fire Alarm Course

Course Description:

This training program is designed to provide 3E0X1 personnel with the necessary knowledge and skills to conduct basic fire alarm system testing, inspection, and maintenance in compliance with base, local, state, and federal standards. The course will cover the fundamentals of fire alarm systems, including system components, testing procedures, and troubleshooting techniques. Participants will also learn about the relevant codes and regulations governing fire alarm systems on military bases, such as the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 72, Unified Facility Criteria (UFC) 3-600-01, and Underwriters Laboratories (UL) standards 864, 268, 217, and 268A.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of the training, participants will be able to:

Describe the fundamental components of a fire alarm system, including the Fire Alarm Control Panel (FACP), smoke detectors, heat detectors, pull stations, Notification Appliance Circuits (NAC), power supply, and Radio Frequency (RF) transmission technology.

Understand the purpose and function of fire alarm system components.

Perform basic fire alarm system testing and inspection procedures.

Identify common fire alarm system problems and apply troubleshooting techniques.

Understand the relevant codes and regulations governing fire alarm systems on military bases.

Course Delivery

  3. a) Students will be required to meet the following expectations:
    • Possess a personal computer or tablet for the entirety of the course. This will enable students to access digital resources, participate in interactive discussions, and engage in online activities as part of the learning process.
    • Download the NFPA72 reference material using the NFPA links available on the Air Force Portal. This resource is essential for enhancing understanding of fire alarm systems and complying with relevant codes and standards.
    b) Instructors will provide the following:
    • Fire Alarm System Components: The instructor will supply a FACP, smoke detectors, heat detectors, pull stations, NAC, power supply and RF technology. This equipment will allow students to gain hands-on experience with field components that constitute a Fire Alarm System.
    • Printed or Downloadable Reference Materials: The instructor will furnish additional reference materials to supplement student’s understanding of the subject matter. These materials include Unified Facility Criteria (UFC) 3-600-01, as well as Underwriters Laboratories (UL) standards 864, 268, 217, and 268A. Students can either access these resources in printed format or download them for digital reference.
  4. Government Furnished Equipment (GFE): A well-equipped classroom will be provided, furnished with tables, desks, and comfortable seating arrangements to create an ideal training environment. Additionally, the presence of a whiteboard and projection equipment, will be accompanied by high-quality audio to support video presentations and encourage active class participation.
  5. Lectures: The instructor will deliver informative lectures on various topics, including current local, state, and federal codes governing Fire Protection Systems. The lectures aim to provide a structured learning experience, enabling students to grasp the intricacies of maintaining fire alarm systems their components and initiating devices within the framework of current guidelines.
  6. Interactive Discussions: In addition to lectures, interactive discussions allow students to actively participate, ask questions and engage in course related topics. Through these discussion students can deepen their understanding and seek clarifications on various concepts.
  7. Practical Exercises: The course concludes with a practical exam that assesses the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the training. This exam aims to reinforce confidence in applying the information and practical experience gained during the course.
