BLPS48 - Basic Lightning Protection Course (48)

Training Dates: TBD

This training program fulfills the requirements for Lightning Protection training of Air Force Civil Engineer personnel, Base Safety representatives, and individuals responsible for designing, installing, testing, and inspecting electrical, grounding, and lightning protection systems. The course adheres to the current DoDI 5160.68, AFMAN 32-1065, DESR 6055.09, and NFPA 780 standards.

Throughout the course, participants will acquire comprehensive knowledge about the installation, maintenance, testing, and grounding of lightning protection systems (LPS). The training will cover Air Force guidance and Instructions, as well as National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards on electrical safety, bonding, static electricity, and lightning protection.

The course outline is as follows:

Day 1:

  • Electrical safety introduction
  • Overview of LPS and various types of overhead lightning protection equipment
  • Identification and compatibility of materials
  • Comparison of Surge Protective Devices (SPD) and LPS
  • Principles of grounding and bonding

 

Day 2:

  • Review of reference materials, including the latest versions of applicable NFPA 780, AFMAN 32-1065, DESR 6055.09 and UFC 3-575-01
  • Maintenance and repair procedures
  • Testing procedures

 

Day 3:

  • Review of LPS reference standards and practical applications
  • Practical exercises to reinforce key concepts
  • Final exam and course evaluation
Course Delivery
The course described is a face-to-face training session that involves direct interaction between the instructor and the students. Here are the key features of the course delivery:
  1. Instructor-led: Throughout the training, an experienced instructor will lead the course, offering guidance, instructions, and detailed explanations to the participants. The instructor’s role is to facilitate the session and ensure effective learning.
  1. Materials Provided: During the training, the instructor will provide a Megohmmeter for practical exercises. Students will also receive a hard copy of the NFPA 780 reference book. In addition, the instructor will print and distribute a course guide that will be used throughout the instruction. To further enhance the students’ training experience, stationary materials will also be included.
  1. Government Furnished Equipment (GFE): A well-equipped classroom will be provided, furnished with tables, desks, and comfortable seating arrangements to create an ideal training environment. Additionally, the presence of a whiteboard and projection equipment, will be accompanied by high-quality audio to support video presentations and encourage active class participation.
  1. Lectures: The instructor will deliver lectures, which involve presenting information, concepts, videos and theories related to the subject matter. This format is a proven method for delivering knowledge and ensuring that students receive the necessary information.
  1. Interactive Discussions: The course will also include interactive discussions, where students can actively participate, ask questions, and engage in conversations related to the topics covered. This allows for a deeper understanding and clarification of concepts.
  1. Practical Exercises: At the conclusion of the course, there will be practical exercises. These exercises are designed to apply the knowledge and skills learned during the lectures and discussions. It provides students with hands-on experience and helps reinforce their understanding of the subject matter.
